EUR 2.2 million set aside to help uphold minorities' rights

Ljubljana, 2 February - The government has earmarked EUR 2.2 million to co-fund efforts to implement bilingualism and constitutional rights of the Italian and Hungarian minorities this year, the Government Communication Office said on Thursday.

The act on the financing of municipalities sets down that municipalities where the members of the two minorities live or self-governing ethnic communities in these municipalities receive the funds accounting for 0.15% of the municipalities' total eligible spending under the annual budget.

In 2023, taking into account the per capita lump-sum funding for municipalities of EUR 700, the funds total EUR 2.2 million, up by some 8% year-on-year.

The funds will go to nine municipalities and the Sall Hungarian Self-Governing Community, which has requested direct funding.
