Ljubljana gets Prekmurje Square
Ljubljana, 19 August - Joining in the celebrations of the centenary of Prekmurje's reunification with Slovenia, Ljubljana honoured the country's north-easternmost region by inaugurating a square bearing the name of the region.

Prekmurje Square, or Prekmurski Trg in Slovenian, is located where Poljanska Street, Poljanski Embankment and Rozmanova Street meet.
Addressing the event, Slovenia's former President Milan Kučan stressed the people of Prekmurje had drawn strongly on their Slovenian national, cultural and linguistic identity over the centuries.
Kučan, who comes from Prekmurje, recalled many individuals who had played a role in preserving Slovenian indentity in the region between the rivers Mura and Raba.
He believes the centenary celebrations have made the Slovenians outside Prekmurje more strongly aware of this region than ever before in the past 100 years.
The inauguration was attended by several other politicians, including President Borut Pahor, some ministers and MPs, as well as the mayors of Ljubljana and Murska Sobota, Zoran Janković and Aleksander Jevšek, respectively.
Jevšek thanked Ljubljana for giving Prekmurje the same recognition as to Primorska, another region, in the west, which celebrates its reunification with Slovenia.
As the square was declared open, Vlado Kreslin, a popular singer-songwriter from Prekmurje who lives in Ljubljana, sang a few songs.
