SNS Boss, Former Farm Minister Charged with Bribery

Ljubljana, 28 October (STA) - The Koper criminal police have charged National Party (SNS) president Zmago Jelincic and former Agriculture Minister Milan Pogacnik of bribery. However, the prosecution will have to wait until police present additional evidence from seized computers before it can start proceedings.

Jelincic and Pogacnik had been apprehended and questioned by the police on 9 March after they were caught on wiretaps arranging rezoning of land in NE Slovenia in exchange for SNS support for a key farmland law and a planned motion to oust the minister. Pogacnik resigned a day later.

Both suspects told the STA on Thursday that they had not yet been officially notified of the charges and while Pogacnik did not wish to give any comments, Jelincic pointed out the indictment was "total idiocy" and was probably ordered by Interior Minister Katarina Kresal.

According to a recent report by political weekly Mladina, the slow speed of the procedure is attributed to problems the police are facing in collecting, reviewing and processing the data from computers that were confiscated in the March sting.
