Pošta Slovenije Pre-Tax Profit Down 38% in 2012

Maribor, 27 February (STA) - National postal services operator Pošta Slovenije generated EUR 6.5m in profit before tax in 2012 according to unaudited data, which is 38% less than a year earlier. Chief supervisor Davorin Kračun said that the results were influenced by the financial crisis, liberalisation of postal services and a drop in the value of NKBM bank.

Pošta Slovenije is moreover facing the consequences of distinct changes in communication habits, with digital technologies taking over. The company's operations were hindered also by legislative changes and cost-cutting efforts on the part of the users, said Kračun.

The result is in line with the company's financial plan, which was revised in November. The revised document is much more modest than the original financial plan, which estimated the 2012 profit of Pošta Slovenije at EUR 17.2m.

Kračun said after a session of the supervisory board that the management of Pošta Slovenije adopted both short-term and long-term measures to boost operations in the first half of 2013.

The measures include streamlining, boosting staff efficiency and rationalisation of its network. Pošta Slovenije is also to have the services of local postal offices outsourced, while some offices are to become mobile.

The postal services provider is moreover to centralise its delivery system and reduce labour costs.

The company will place special focus on updating its existing services and developing new, as only the latter can substitute the loss in revenue from classic postal services, said Kračun.
