Ljubljana, 21 July (STA) - The Ljubljana Tourist Board has launched a smart card which will enable unlimited city bus rides and access to a number of sights in and around the capital. The Urbana Tourist Card is intended mainly for visitors from abroad.

The number of these has increased, head of the board Majda Vajda told a press conference in Ljubljana on Wednesday. Overnight stays increased in May for the first time after a 20-month period of decline.

Trends could have turned in April if it were not for the closure of the Ljubljana airport and the volcanic ash cloud, which are estimated to have cost Ljubljana 4,000 overnights.

The Ljubljana Tourist Board registered 249,655 overnight stays in the first half of the year, which is up 4% on the same period last year.

The same increase is projected for the whole this year; Ljubljana is to record around 700,000 overnights and 370,000 arrivals.

Visitors to Ljubljana are estimated to spend an average of round EUR 122 a day, which adds up to EUR 85.4m in direct tourist expenditure for the whole year. Most visitors come from Italy.

Presenting the Urbana Tourist Card, Vajda said it offered "the best way to explore Ljubljana and its sights". There are three cards available: valid for 24, 48 and 72 hours at EUR 23, EUR 30 and EUR 35, respectively.

The purchase of the card will enable the holder to visit Ljubljana museums and galleries, take a ride up Ljubljana Castle on the funicular or train, a boat trip on the Ljubljanica and a guided tour of the city.

The card, which is part of the system of the Urbana city bus card, will also allow access to more far-off sights, including Arboretum Volcji potok or the Technical Museum in Bistra near Vrhnika.

The card is on sale at 12 hotels, the Ljubljana train station, the office of Festival Ljubljana and three tourist information points. It will soon be available also via the website of Tourism Ljubljana.
