Plan Calls for Share of Renewables to Rise to 25% by 2020

Celje, 18 May (STA) - The Economy Ministry has drafted a national action plan for renewables which puts emphasis on transport, heating and electricity production and aims at meeting Slovenia's aim of increasing the share of renewables in the energy mix to 25% by 2020, Minister Matej Lahovnik announced on Tuesday.

The public have been given 30 days to provide feedback. Lahovnik expects numerous initiatives and proposals regarding the plan which the government plans to adopt by the end of June.

Slovenia currently uses in transport only 1.2% of all renewables, and this share has to be increased to 10% by 2020. Lahovnik called for a higher share of biodiesel and bioethanol.

The share of renewables in heating stands at 25%, while the goal for 2020 is to increase it to 32%, the minister said, adding that the relevant share in electricity production should be boosted from the current 28% to 42%.

"A total of 500 buildings using renewables will be constructed in Slovenia in the next two years," Lahovnik said, adding that he was also inclined to exploitation of the potential of the river Mura in the northeast.

According to Lahovnik, the government would provide EUR 20m for energy efficiency projects for buildings and EUR 70m for the use of renewables at the annual level. He announced the establishment of economic development centres, a project worth EUR 185m.

Andreja Urbancic of the Jozef Stefan research institute added that Slovenia would have to reduce energy costs in the public sector by EUR 120m by 2020.

Lahovnik also announced a new national energy programme, which is expected to be discussed by the government in the autumn.
