PM Gives Erjavec Time to Read Charges in Patria Scandal

Copenhagen, 18 December (STA) - Prime Minister Borut Pahor has decided to give Environment Minister Karl Erjavec some time to read the charges filed against him over a defence deal concluded during his term as the defence minister before deciding whether Erjavec should resign. Erjavec has not received the charges yet.

Erjavec told the press in Copenhagen on Friday that he would prove that charges of misfeasance in office in connection with the purchase of armoured personnel carriers from Finnish contractor Patria were unfounded.

He is however aware that this is also a political issue, so "if I conclude that it would be right if I resign, I will do this". However, if the court rules that he is innocent, some will have to take responsibility for this.

Pahor meanwhile said that the principle of being innocent until proven guilty also applies to ministers, adding however that this was also a political issue. He added he would make a decision soon.

Asked whether he still trusted Erjavec, Pahor said that this was not a question of trust but a decision him and Erjavec would have to make.
