Family Law Bill Headed for Govt Approval

Ljubljana, 30 November (STA) - The public debate on the family law bill, which equalises same-sex unions with other family unions and bans corporal punishment of children, has concluded and the motion will be sent to the government this week, the Labour, Family and Social Affairs Ministry said on Monday.

While not caving in to pressures to withdraw the provisions allowing gay marriage and the adoption of children by gay couples, the ministry decided to add a provision prohibiting other forms of demeaning treatment of children, such as psychological violence.

Labour, Family and Social Affairs Ministry State Secretary Anja Kopac Mrak said that the ministry had received no expert and founded arguments against equalising same-sex unions with other partnerships.

Furthermore, no expert arguments have been offered that this would run contrary to the good of the child, she added.

Critics of giving same-sex couples the same rights as traditional families have have already announced they would push for a referendum if the new piece of legislation is passed.

Acting head of the ministry's family directorate Ana Vodicar said that the ministry had not feared a referendum when presenting the motion. The ministry believes that the Constitutional Court should ban such a referendum.

The ministry also added a provision binding all institutions that suspect a child might be in danger to immediately inform the court or social services.

The ministry received 240 comments and proposals to its draft bill.
