GZS Head Calls for Cooperation Between Businesses and Research

Ljubljana, 26 November (STA) - Slovenian economy must become innovative, transparent and open to find synergies for a technological breakthrough, the general manager of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GZS) Samo Hribar Milic stressed at a conference on Thursday, underlining the need for closer ties between businesses and the research sphere.

Slovenia economy has too few centres of development and also lacks business teams which are able to cooperate with science and research sectors, Hribar Milic stressed at the conference dedicated to a debate on technological platforms and open innovation.

According to him, GZS is looking for new ways of connecting businesses with the research sector, as the methods used so far failed to bear fruit. "The science-research sphere is too alienated," he stressed.

Ales Mihelic, the head of the Directorate for Technology, meanwhile stressed that open innovation meant creating ties between key players to create the end product, while the knowledge must be globally competitive.

In the past years, major changes have occurred in Slovenia in the field of openness and cooperation, including technology clusters and technology platforms, which were created as the industry's response to Slovenia's priorities, Mihelic explained.

The University of Ljubljana Chancellor Radovan Stanislav Pejovnik meanwhile stressed that Slovenia had been dealing with partial problems for too long.

"We came to a situation when global problems need to be overcome, but our culture is a major hurdle," he stressed, adding that the culture needed to be changed to emphasise success, priorities and overall cooperation.
