Basketball: Olimpija Notch First Win in Euroleague

Ljubljana, 25 November (STA) - Slovenian basketball champions Union Olimpija rebounded from their 0-4 slump in the Euroleague by beating Italy's Lottomatica 87:70 (23:21, 48:28, 64:48) in Ljubljana on Wednesday, earning their first win in Europe's elite basketball competition and keeping slim chances of advancing in the next round alive.

With leading scorer Matt Walsh out with an injury, somebody else in olimpija had to step up, and the hero this time was veretan guard Sani Becirovic, who contributed 24 points.

The guests from Rome were a match for Olimpija only in the first quarter of what was the decisive match for the Slovenian club.

Olimpija exploded in the second period when other players also pusged the tempo, allowing Lottomatica only 7 points while scoring 25 to increase the lead to 20 points at halftime.

The Ljubljana club continued with aggressive defence in the third quarter and used some good sharpshooting from guard Jaka Klobucar, who buried three consecutive three-pointers to extend the lead to a game-high 27 points (57:30).

It was pretty much over at that moment, and Olimpija's head coach Jure Zdovc decided to give seldom-used players some playing time, which resulted in Lottomatica trimming Olimpija's lead by the end of the match.

Slovenia's sole representative in the Euroleague will play game 6 of the first round of the Euroleague at home against Israel's Maccabi on 3 December.
