The Slovenian Defence Ministry had earlier said that the soldier died in a shooting incident that did not involve other people, but did not give more details.
It has since emerged that the the woman in her 20s likely took her own life, commercial station POP TV said citing unofficial sources.
Army spokesperson Simon Korez did not want to confirm this at a press conference, but did say that the soldier shot herself with her own automatic weapon.
He reiterated that there was no indication that a second person was involved in the death of the soldier, whom he described as an "exemplary soldier".
He said that the victim had been in the service for around a year and that this was her first mission abroad.
The death is the first of a Slovenian soldier on a foreign mission since Slovenia began participating in international operations in the late 1990s.
Slovenia currently has nearly 400 soldiers stationed in Kosovo.
Korez told a press conference that there have been no cases of suicide on the job in the Slovenian army for over five years.
POP TV said that it is unclear why the soldier took her own life as there were no indications that she had trouble with her colleagues or superiors.
According to Korez, the soldier in question had not sought assistance in recent times.
POP TV's website 24ur.com also reported that other service personnel witnessed the incident and are being offered psychological assistance.
Korez said that the troops had shooting training today, which is why they took out their weapons from a storage facility. He said that the incident did not happen during training.
The Defence Ministry has already expressed its condolences to the family of the dead soldier. It said that Slovenian authorities have been notified of the incident and that the army police have started an investigation.
Condolences have also been extended to the family by President Danilo Tuerk, who is the supreme commander of the army. Tuerk has called on the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation, his office told STA.
