Slovenia Passes CoE Chairmanship on to Switzerland

Strasbourg, 18 November (STA) - Slovenia finished on Wednesday its six-month term at the helm of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, handing the chairmanship over to Switzerland. The event in Strasbourg, France, was attended by Slovenian Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar and his Swiss counterpart Micheline Calmy-Rey.

Zbogar took stock of Slovenia's six months, which started on 12 May, touching also on CoE's activities related to the armed conflict in Georgia last year. Calmy-Rey meanwhile took the opportunity to present Switzerland's priorities as the chair of the committee.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Slovenia's main achievements include the agreement on bolstering dialogue and cooperation between the committee of ministers and the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe, which enabled to end the month-long complications and elect the new Council of Europe Secretary General, Thorbjorn Jagland.

The ministry also stressed Slovenia's efforts in the field of safeguarding and promotion of human rights, with particular emphasis on the rights of children, and the efforts for a further reform of the European Court of Human Rights.
