One Paedophile Priest in Prison, One Sought with Warrant

Dob, 6 November (STA) - The former parish priest of Ormoz who has been found guilty on three counts of sexual assault started serving his sentence at the Dob prison this week. Meanwhile, police have issued an international warrant against the first priest ever to be sentenced for child sex abuse in Slovenia, daily Vecer reported on Friday.

Ormoz priest Albin Znidaric was sentenced to five and a half years in prison in mid-July as the Maribor Higher Court upheld the September 2008 verdict of the Ptuj District Court.

The court found the priest guilty of sexual assault against a minor, sexual abuse of a mentally-disabled person and repetition, pronouncing a prison sentence and a five-year ban on work with minors against him.

After the verdict became final, Znidaric was summoned to start serving his prison sentence. Since he failed to do so voluntarily, a warrant was issued against him and he was arrested earlier this week in the northeastern Stajersko region.

The prison facility at Dob in southeastern Slovenia is also awaiting Franci Frantar, the former parish priest of a small village near Ljubljana, whom the Ljubljana Higher Court sentenced to five years in December 2008 for sexual abuse of a nine-year-old girl.

Since he failed to report to serve the sentence and the police cannot find him, a warrant has been issued against him, Vecer says citing unofficial information.
