POP TV: Victims of Kranj Bomb Attack Claim Compensation

Ljubljana, 5 November (STA) - Victims of the bomb attack in front of a nightclub in Kranj on 25 October demand compensation from the state over negligence, since it has been established that the hand grenade used was stolen from a military warehouse, commercial broadcaster POP TV reported on Thursday.

According to POP TV, legal experts say that "Defence Minister Ljubica Jelusic, who has been denying the responsibility all along, will probably have to pay compensation".

Lawyer Franci Matoz believes that the Defence Ministry failed to take all the necessary measures to prevent the June theft of dangerous arms, which according to him led to this tragic incident.

Legal expert Miha Juhart explained for POP TV that the ministry or the state could answer despite the fact that the arms had been stolen if it is proven that the theft was brought about by negligence.

The issue whether or not this was negligence might in fact prove to be crucial for the case, he added.

Eight people sustained injuries, three of them grave, when a M75 hand grenade exploded in front of the Million Club near Creina Hotel on 25 October.

The suspects - aged 20, 21, 25 and 39 - were arrested near the border town of Metlika in the southeast during an attempt to flee to Croatia.

The investigation showed that the grenade and the arms seized during house searches of the suspects originated from a defunct army warehouse near Pivka, SW.
