Ljubljana, 27 June (STA) - Around 500 people took to the streets of Ljubljana on Saturday to make a stand against violence and discrimination against gays and lesbians. Protected by enhanced security, the 9th Slovenian gay pride parade has so far passed without incidents.

Equal rights for same-sex couples continues to be one of the main demands of the Slovenian gay and lesbian community, which got together today at the Metelkova alternative arts centre at 5 PM to head for he Presernov trg square and later for the parliament and government building to end the parade in the old town centre.

Backed by a number of independent supporters, the parade was also escorted by a strong police force, which was not able to prevent on Thursday an attack against gay rights activist Mitja Blazic.

Also on hand was Interior Minister Katarina Kresal, who told STA she supported the efforts of gays and lesbians for equal status.

"These are people like everyone else and I wish that human rights would be secured for them as they are for everyone else. I have already proposed to my colleagues in the coalition parties to reflect on whether the drawing up of the family legislation is not a chance to also put their rights on par with everyone else's," she said.
