Minister: Roma Education Relatively Well Regulated in Slovenia

Brdo pri Kranju, 25 May (STA) - Education of Roma children is relatively well regulated in Slovenia, compared to other European countries, Education Minister Igor Luksic told the press after the first day of an international conference on education of the Roma, which is taking place at Brdo pri Kranju on Monday and Tuesday.

However, schools in certain areas still face low attendance and poor results of Roma children, Luksic noted at the conference organised as part of Slovenia's chairmanship of CoE Committee of Ministers.

The director of education and languages with the CoE, Gabriel Mazza, stressed that the CoE focused intensively on inter-cultural dialogue and education as means of reaching inter-cultural understanding.

Education can play a key role in developing more open relationship toward different cultures, tolerance and understanding for other people's views, language and culture, Mazza said.

He added that education should also help create and encourage a positive attitude toward Roma culture and language. The CoE is trying to move the Roma from the margins of the society toward its centre by stimulating education of Roma children, Mazza added.

He believes that education of Roma children is a very sensitive issue, however, the work done so far - the didactic material and training of teachers - was impressive.

Gabi Cacinovic Vogrincic, a professor at the Ljubljana Faculty of Social Work, said that a tolerant place of coexistence can only be created through cooperation. She hopes that this cooperation includes the voices of all Roma and all others who live in Europe.
